Top Honeymoon Destinations
You have just experienced the most wonderful day of your life; your wedding day. This could have been a traditional church affair a beautiful outdoor ceremony, or a stunning country house wedding.
Traditionally, after the wedding comes the honeymoon, which will no doubt be the best, most romantic holiday of your life. So, where to go to spend your first time away together as a married couple? It can be extremely difficult to decide!
Sure, places like Paris, Italy and Hawaii are romantic, but they’re very popular with newlyweds. If you want to go somewhere that’s a little more under the radar, then read on. Here are our top honeymoon destinations.
Buenos Aires, Argentina
If it’s bright city lights you and your partner are after, then forget Paris or Rome: Buenos Aires is where you should go.
Argentina’s capital is passionate and fiery, making it one of our top honeymoon destinations. Buenos Aires’ Latin origins give the city a distinct European air, making it extremely romantic.
Foodies will rejoice in Buenos Aires: you’ll find steakhouses on practically every street corner, and you can’t miss out on the incredible Dulce de Leche for dessert.
When it comes to nights out in Buenos Aires, the later the better. Restaurants won’t open until 9pm, and don’t even think about going to a bar before 12am – even then, they’ll only just be filling up. Of course, one thing you’ll have to try out when in Buenos Aires is the sultry Argentine Tango. Either attend a class at one of the many dance schools, or freestyle it in the clubs!
Buenos Aires is huge, and you can easily spend a lot of time here. Alternatively, it makes a great base: you could head over to other big cities like Rosario or Córdoba, visit the winemaking regions, or travel south to Los Glaciares National Park. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, why not catch the ferry over to Montevideo, Uruguay?
Sure, Greece and Croatia are stunning, but if you want to escape the crowds, then why not consider nearby Montenegro instead?
For such a tiny country, Montenegro has a lot to offer. Firstly, there’s the beaches: with a coastline spanning 295km, 72km of which are beaches, there are a lot of opportunities to soak up the sun, and swim in the calm Adriatic Sea.
Perhaps the most romantic area to stay is Sveti Stefan: a tiny islet with luxury hotels, the sandy beaches are out-of-bounds from anyone who’s not staying there.
Budva Riviera boasts lots of beaches, with sandy Petrovac one of the most beautiful. The UNESCO-status Old Town of Budva, with its winding cobblestone streets and authentic Balkan restaurants, makes it a great place to explore in the evenings.
Whether you plan to spend your honeymoon totally relaxing or exploring the island, Montenegro offers many opportunities for both. Compact in size, Montenegro consists of 70% mountains, with its stunning scenery just waiting to be discovered.
Head to Boka Kotorska, an Old Town by the bay of the Adriatic. Drive up the Serpentine for possibly the most breath-taking view you’ll ever see.
You should also travel south to Southern Europe’s largest lake, Lake Skadar. Located on the border of Montenegro and Albania, it’s the perfect place for a romantic boat ride, where you can spot local wildlife and enjoy the dazzling views of the rugged mountains, and sparkling waters.
Banff & Jasper National Parks, Canada
If you and your partner prefer snow to sun, then the perfect place to honeymoon is in Alberta, Canada.
The scenery at Banff and Jasper is amongst the most stunning in the world: the Rockies feature as a backdrop, with a combination of picture-perfect lakes, icy glaciers, plummeting waterfalls and vast forests all on your doorstep.
You may also come across the local wildlife, including elk, moose, wolves and bears. How could Banff and Jasper not feature on this list as one of the top honeymoon destinations?!
Lake Louise, with its shimmering turquoise waters, may be top on the list of all holidaymakers in this area, but it’s somewhere you should definitely visit. It’s particularly beautiful in winter, where you can go full-on winter wonderland mode, and skate on the lake. The Ice Magic Festival is held in January, and artists carve creations entirely from ice – if you’re lucky enough, you might get to see it!
Continue your romantic honeymoon in style at Banff’s hot springs: the geothermically-heated springs are rich with minerals, and are a great place to sit back and relax.
If you find yourself craving the city life whilst you’re up in the mountains, then Calgary is only 90 minutes away, with a vast range of cool eateries and boutique bars. It’s not hard to see why we rate this area as one of the top honeymoon destinations!
Everyone goes to Thailand and Vietnam: go somewhere different for your honeymoon and visit Cambodia!
Siem Riep, gateway to the Angkor Wat ruins, is perhaps the most touristy area. Whilst it’s worth a visit, make sure you explore beyond this area, as Cambodia is a truly beautiful country with so much to offer.
Is it beaches you’re after? Head to Rabbit Island. Situated just off the mainland, the sandy shores will make you feel a million miles away from home. Alternatively, if it’s diving you’re after, check out Long Set Beach in Koh Rong, which boasts an abundance of marine-life and coral.
Cambodia is known for its delicious seafood, especially in coastal areas. Don’t dismiss their cuisine for neighbouring Thai or Vietnamese – the herbs they use give food a distinct taste.
Perhaps the most popular Cambodian dish is Fish Amok, a creamy curry with ginger and coconut milk, wrapped in a banana leaf. For meat lovers, try Kaw, which is braised chicken or pork, topped with an egg.
What we love about Cambodia, and why we’ve picked it as one of our top honeymoon destinations, is the fact that it offers culture in abundance. Don’t forget to put some time aside to visit the many temples and local markets, and catch a traditional dance show.
You should also schedule a couple of days in to visit the capital, Phnom Penh. The Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda are unmissable, and there is an incredible range of restaurants to try.
Florida Keys, USA
Miami is great, but it can be pretty full-on. If you want your honeymoon to be relaxing, then head south to the remote Florida Keys.
With the average temperature a balmy 25 degrees Celsius year-round, this is a great alternative tropical paradise, and one of our top honeymoon destinations of choice.
You’ll struggle to believe you’re in the USA, here. Key West – the furthest south – is closer to Cuba than it is to Miami, and the huge Cuban influence is clear to see. Palm trees line the streets (sorry, sidewalks), outdoor cafés offer a mouth-watering array of cuisine, and there are plenty of opportunities to embark on a romantic sunset cruise.
If you and your partner are both animal lovers, then head to Marathon. Here, you can swim with dolphins at the Dolphin Research Centre, pet sea turtles at the Turtle Hospital, or feed stingrays.
43 of the islands are connected by one stunning coastal road, so make the most of your honeymoon in the Florida Keys, and get exploring!
